We know that we are not all alike in terms of our genetics. Today there are many companies offering tests to find out about your ancestry. Being health conscious, when we identify ourselves as belonging to a particular group of people, we want to know more about our genetic risks. All people have risk for genetic diseases, but some groups of people may have an increased risk for particular genetic diseases. In the Ashkenazi Jewish population, several such inherited diseases are known. These include Gaucher disease, cystic fibrosis, Canavan disease, Bloom syndrome and others. Gaucher disease (pronounced “go-shay”) is the most common Jewish genetic disorder. Among Ashkenazi Jews, 1 person in 15 is a carrier for this disease, and 1/850 has Gaucher disease. The positive news is that for some of these disorders we now have treatment.
